Hey guys! While I generally use this space of my website to talk about my finances, I like to share the projects I'm working on as well - after all, this is my portfolio website for my web/graphic design work.
For the past two years I've had a little shop on Etsy that I started after getting laid off from my first job. I was searching for new full-time work, but still had living expenses and student loans to pay, so our of desperation, started selling video game related ornaments. Long story short, they went viral via Reddit, 9Gag, and other forms of social media and I ended the holiday season with 700+ orders. The following year was over 900 and the profits allowed me to pay off my car.
Despite my success with Etsy, I wanted to give Shopify a try this year for a few reasons. One being my branding - Shopify allows me to customize themes and establish my branding to match my website. Two, Etsy takes a good portion of fees from your sales where Shopify is just a monthly expense. Lastly, my workload last year with a full-time job, overnight pet sitting, AND having to make 30+ ornaments a night all before Christmas drove me to insanity and many tears. It was extremely stressful, so having less SEO, that Etsy had built in because of their brand recognition, essentially means less orders, which I'm okay with this year thanks to my new job.
That being said, I still love orders! And I especially love paying off my student loans faster, so definitely give my shop a visit and see if there's something you like. Better yet, share it with your friends and family if you can!
